Billboards were highly visible in Edmonton in the 1920s. They were the dominant medium of advertising: an effective way of advertising in a city with a large number of vacant lots. Large billboards were used to improve the 1920s streetscape by concealing undeveloped lots and corner vistas with advertising space. Representations of companies that existed in the 1920’s provide insight into lifestyle, commerce and social aspects of life in early Edmonton.

In partnership with the City of Edmonton, Fort Edmonton Park completed the historical display panel project Spring of 2009. The panels feature advertisements for popular 1920’s brands and products, including Lux Soap, Fry’s Cocoa, AC Sparkplugs, LaFleche Tailors, Hotel Selkirk, and Coca-Cola.
